Georgia-Pacific Corporation is a leader in both consumer and commercial tissue products that generates more than $20 billion annual revenue from manufacturing and marketing operations. Georgia-Pacific's at home market has gained a strong retail presence in grocery stores, warehouse clubs and with mass merchandisers across North America. Georgia-Pacific products also continue to thrive in the away-from-home market which are found in schools, hospitals, restaurants and hotels.

Georgia-Pacific Corporation is one of the world's leading manufacturers and marketers of tissue, packaging, paper, building products, pulp and related chemicals. We have 300 locations worldwide, providing exceptional productivity and maximum flexibility to respond to changing marketplace conditions. More importantly, are the 55,000 employees who have demonstrated a track record of creativity and resourcefulness in meeting the challenges toward long-term growth. Production on the mill site in Old Town began about 1860, in the form of a sawmill. Soda pulp production began as a byproduct of the sawmill, thus the Penobscot Chemical Fiber Co. was established in 1882.

Over the next half century, production increased and the original use of soda pulp was abandoned in favor of a sulfate process. In 1967, Penobscot Company merged with Diamond International Corporation. Over the next few years, construction of a new consumer facility began. This was the first attempt to produce finished products at the plant. A second tissue machine and support equipment were installed in 1978. In 1983, the facility was purchased by James River Corporation. In 1997, James River merged with Fort Howard, creating Fort James. In 2000, Georgia-Pacific purchased Fort James Corporation.

The Old Town Mill has approximately 450 employees coming to work from an area of Ellsworth to Millinocket and from Newport to Lincoln. The Old Town Mill spends $23 million locally and a total of $55 million statewide.

Georgia-Pacific's commitment to the community is demonstrated by the Old Town Mill's involvement in local charities and community organizations. The Georgia-Pacific Home for children is a house used by United Cerebral Palsy for family support services. The home also includes a groomed nature trail that includes wheelchair accessibility. This allows anyone at any age to explore the wonders of the forest. Georgia-Pacific's Environmental Education Outreach Program provides natural resource education to schools in the community and others in the region. Georgia-Pacific operates an award winning outdoor classroom and demonstration forest as well. Over 8,000 visitors from pre-school to college level have learned about the natural life cycles of Maine's renewable forest resources. Georgia-Pacific also actively supports Project Learning Tree, the Tree Foundation and other educational programs in our communities.

Continuing commitment to Maine's natural ecosystems is exhibited by the adoption of the Enfield Fish Hatchery. Georgia-Pacific assists with the upkeep of the facility by providing materials, engineering and financial support. Georgia-Pacific also recognizes the importance of safety at the workplace. Recently, the Old Town Mill received the Pulp and Paper Safety Associations (P&PSA) "Most Improved Safety Record Award."
