Energy

MPPA advocates measures to bring Maine’s energy costs down for industrial facilities in Maine. Two recent examples include:

  • MPPA negotiated with the Maine DEP and stakeholder groups on a bill to reduce allowable sulfur levels in fuel oil. MPPA worked out language to delay implementation of the lower standards, and to exempt manufacturing facilities from the very strict low sulfur standards that will be adopted for number 2 oil. This allowed the Association to support the bill, and it passed as amended with nearly unanimous support in the legislature.
  • MPPA worked with the legislature to allow the newly formed Efficiency Maine Agency to provide meaningful grants to industrial facilities for energy efficiency improvements. Many of MPPA member mills have subsequently applied for, and received, grants for this purpose.
