Domtar Industries Inc.
Domtar is the second largest producer of uncoated freesheet paper in North America and the third largest in the world. It is also a leading manufacturer of business papers, printing and publishing papers, and technical and specialty papers. Domtar manages close to 36 million acres of forest land in Canada and the United States, and produces lumber and other wood products. Domtar has 12,500 employees across North America. The company also has a 50% investment interest in Norampac Inc., the largest Canadian producer of containerboard.
At Domtar, customers are one of our three pillars, along with shareholders and employees. Our goal is to have a long-term relationship based on mutual trust with all customers. We will continue to give our customers the products and services that they need to become suppliers of choice to their own clients. We believe that by doing so, we enhance their loyalty and, in turn, improve our own ability to maintain a good financial performance, even in softer market conditions. As part of achieving these results, Domtar has made a priority of adding depth and range to its paper product line. That is why the company acquired E.B. Eddy in 1998 and why, in August 2001, Domtar purchased four top-notch paper mills in the United States. These mills, located in Ashdown (Arkansas), Nekoosa and Port Edwards (Wisconsin) and Woodland (Maine), will increase our capacity to serve offices and homes with our renowned line of business papers; allow us to provide a broader range and higher quality line of printing and publishing papers to commercial printers; and strengthen our ability to develop new technical and specialty papers for subsequent conversion to highly specific end uses.
All 12,500 employees are very excited about the new Domtar. By working together and sharing best practices, our employees will make Domtar quality the industry benchmark. So doing, we will also succeed in making our company the preferred supplier of paper in North America. With the company’s acquisition of four U.S. mills, Domtar now has one of the largest lines of paper products, affording customers one of the broadest range under a single roof in North America. Our total annual paper production capacity stands at 2.8 million tons, with almost all the pulp used in this paper manufactured internally.
New product development is an integral part of our corporate culture, with aggressive targets continually being set on an annual basis. This year, for instance, Domtar is on target to deliver eight new products, or 5% of its manufacturing capacity. With the help of our new colleagues in Ashdown, Nekoosa, Port Edwards and Woodland, we expect to be able to practically double this last figure. A dedicated team with roots in our merchants, sales and marketing, and manufacturing groups is spearheading this effort. Domtar is fully leveraging the Internet revolution. e-PaperTM successfully launched in 2000, that supports merchants and distributors from ordering to shipment tracking. In addition, new and comprehensive lines of business and printing paper grades now address both a strong consumer demand for special papers to use with personal computers, and the introduction of digital presses in print shops. An industry-first web site application allows for public viewing and comment on our forestry operations. Reinventing how we do things is our corporate culture. Our strategically designed paper distribution network is able to guarantee delivery in less than 48 hours to most major North American cities. In the end, all is driven by a determination to constantly provide more value to our customers. Domtar’s Woodland Mill employs 555 people at its integrated pulp and paper mill in Baileyville. The mill has been at its current location since it first opened as St. Croix Paper in 1906. The Woodland Mill is known worldwide as the manufacturer of premium quality northern hardwood market pulp and manufactures high quality writing, print and specialty papers. Daily production of hardwood pulp averages 1,100 tons, of which 360 tons is converted to writing and fine papers and the remaining tons are dried and shipped to customers throughout the world. Much of Woodland’s pulp is shipped through the Port of Eastport. Market pulp is also shipped by rail and truck. Domtar is more than a company with pulp and paper mills… It’s a place where generations of papermakers have learned their craft and carefully passed it along to sons and daughters. A place where people believe in their work and families are proud of their heritage. It’s a place where people care deeply about the products they produce. A place where people have a common goal of making pulp and paper that are considered the finest in the world. Our products are constantly being improved to produce cleaner, brighter pulp and paper designed to meet the specific needs of a rapidly changing market. Ultimately, our success will hinge on a simple but powerful company-wide commitment: Turning out tonnage is not what Domtar is about. Providing high quality products to customers is. |
