Since 1854, when our founder, Samuel Dennis Warren, purchased his first paper mill in Westbrook, Maine, Sappi Fine Paper North America has been an innovation leader in the paper industry. Over the years, thousands of hard working Maine citizens have helped our company create the coated woodfree paper industry’s most well known and respected brands.

Today, Sappi Fine Paper North America is the leading producer of coated woodfree paper in the U.S. and also manufactures specialty and technical papers. We are a subsidiary of the global company, Sappi Limited, which produces one out of every four sheets of coated fine paper used in the western world. In Maine, our operations include paper mills in Westbrook and Skowhegan; our Technology Center in Westbrook; and a number of services groups in southern Maine, including our Corporate Data Facility, Financial Services group and Information Technology group.

Sappi’s commitment to Maine remains strong. We employ approximately 1,700 Maine citizens - more than half of all the Sappi employees in the United States. We continue to invest in our Maine manufacturing sites and to find new opportunities to do business in Maine. Over the last five years we have invested $192 million at our Somerset and Westbrook mills, and we have created new jobs by establishing Sappi North America’s Information Technology and Financial Services groups in southern Maine.

Our commitment to Maine extends to improving the quality of life for thousands of children throughout the state. Through our partnerships with dozens of youth organizations, including America’s

Promise - The Alliance for Youth, Reading is Fundamental, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Communities for Children, our employees volunteered more than 2,700 hours to reach over 14,000 Maine children during 2001.
